Can you ever really leave the place where you are from?
SYNOPSIS
After 20 years in the United States, Avner Mendelson returns to Israel with his American wife, Karen, and their 4 year old daughter to carry out a well- intentioned, politically conscious, eco-friendly project: building a solar field in the Negev desert with the local Bedouin population.
But the Bedouins don’t see it that way. Avner faces an uncooperative and mistrusting labor force, a stubborn shepherd who refuses to vacate his pasture of 400 years, and neighbors who repeatedly breach the boundaries of his private property and his domestic life. Also, the chicken he bought from the locals won’t lay eggs.
While Karen’s principles seem unscathed by the realities of life in the desert, where she offers shelter to a Sudanese refugee, she watches in bewilderment as her Israeli husband finds himself shedding every last righteous pretence and embarks on a no-holds-barred battle to get the job done.
TRIGGER
We originally conceived of this film as an Israeli Western. It is an attempt to explore the parallels between the American frontier myth and the Zionist myth of conquering the desert.
